The Director of General Education(DGE), Kerala has banned summer vacation classes in all schools. As per Kerala Educational Rules, the educational institutions in the state should remain closed from the last working day of March for Mid - Summer Vacation and the next academic year would begin from the first working day of June. But it was found that some schools were going against this and conducting classes for High school and Higher Secondary students. Consequently, schools were issued directives against the conduct of classes in the Mid Summer vacation. Still, the Child Rights Protection Commission has received complaints regarding this and instructed to adopt measures to curb this.
Vacation for Pleasure, not Pressure
Recent studies in psychology reveal the fact that vacations are indispensable for the physical and mental sustenance of the students. Continuing with studies, curtailing the vacation period prove to be detrimental to the physical and mental growth of them. Also the simmering heat would pose various health hazards to the children. Hence, all the heads of institutions and school managers of govt/ aided/unaided, lower primary, Upper Primary and High Schools including the schools following CBSE, ICSE syllabus are hereby instructed not to conduct any classes in the Mid Summer Vacation. This may become applicable to Higher Secondary Section too. Rigorous action will be taken against those who violate this. Moreover, it would be the sole responsibility of the school authorities, principals and teachers in the case of any emergencies to the students attending classes due to the summer – heat.
Camps in Vacation
For organizing camps in vacation, prior permission has to be sought from the sub district Edn officer/ Dist Edn Officer concerned and the camp period is limited to the maximum of 10 days in a vacation period. The sanctioning authorities should ensure whether the basic physical amenities including pure water, food, fan etc are made available to the camp participants. The camp organizers should give special care to confirm that there is no distress to the children due to the hot summer season.
The directions in the circular in connection with this must be observed exactly lest District Education Officer should take stringent disciplinary action against such officials.
